Improve focus with Flowtime (aka Flowmodo)

Improve focus with Flowtime (aka Flowmodo)

As an updated spin on the Pomodoro method, the Flowtime technique or “Flowmodo” is an excellent way to balance productivity cycles. In a nutshell Flowtime calls for variable periods of intense undistracted focus combined with regular breaks for improved focus and performance. This can be repeated for many cycles a day over long periods of time often blowing past what you might accomplish otherwise.

Pomodoro expects you to work hard and focused in a short 25-minute cycle then taking a deliberate 5-minute break. On the other hand, Flowmodo specifies neither of these limiting durations suggesting only that you do both. These cycles might vary depending on the situation involving what you are trying to accomplish, the depth of your focus along with your ability to remain focused.

When you are in the flow, let it flow for as long as you possibly can. Being driven to get to a realistic goal before you take a well-deserved break is a powerful motivator.

Flowtime is fairly simple to implement:

  • Pick a task that needs some love
  • Pick a realistic goal to reach that is related to that task (complete might be tempting but sometimes might be too much for a session)
  • Eliminate distractions
  • Get to it and do the thing until you reach the goal
  • Take that well deserved break.

Flowtime pairs well with the concept of Ikigai where you know your sweet spot between the various dimensions. Here you might rotate through the areas of your Ikigai and enjoy the life balance it brings along with the satisfaction of delivering incremental value.
